We’ve been meaning to do this for quite some time now. This section will be dedicated to sharing with you game announcements, updates, behind the scenes, events, tips & tricks and anything else we believe you might be interested in knowing about.
As a first official post it only seems fitting to tell you about how Game Cooks, originally a mobile gaming studio, got its debut in VR. It was around a year ago today, at GDC/VRDC 2016 that we took the decision to jump on the VR bandwagon. And by jump I mean we arrived to SF, with a mobile game demo in our hands and left holding hotel napkins with drawings of our first VR game.
VRDC was our "Aha!" moment
It was at GDC/VRDC 2016 that we realised how fast the VR industry had grown and that if we were ever planning to make that move, then was the time. The space was still quite niche (and for the most part it still is). Things were uncertain enough that both game developers big or small thought twice before jumping in. At Game Cooks, we decided to take that challenge head-on!
Being unity developers, we turned to the engine to create our first official Unity VR project. It only made sense for us as originally a mobile gaming studio to jump into mobile VR. We began working on our first VR game for GearVR. It took about a month’s time to get everybody up to speed and on board but once that was done - it was smooth sailing from there. We started working on HOVR beginning April.
After a few anxiety inducing hiccups, we launched HOVR in October 2016. The game performed extremely well - getting featured on the Oculus app store and under Samsung Picks section for more than two weeks in a row. What was initially intended to be a pilot project in our entry into VR turned out to be a success and we were quite pleased with that.
We had just gotten a taste of VR and suffice to say we wanted to do more! After setting up the HTC Vive at our offices and giving it a go, we decided our next project would be built for the VIVE. By mid-December, the concept for VINDICTA was born and by the time GDC/VRDC came back around in March 2017 we had our first early prototype ready to be tested.
Quickly - VINDICTA is a first-person shooter VR game for HTC Vive set for launch on SteamVR in Early Access in June 2017!
We had the opportunity to demo our game at the coolest spot in town - at the UploadVR offices in San Francisco as part of their UploadVR GDC Party! It was a great night and our first time showing our game outside of Game Cooks. Suffice to say the positive comments and feedback we received were beyond our expectations. GDC/VRDC 2017 was mind-blowing showing us that VR is not going anywhere. In a short year so much has happened and we feel lucky to be in the middle of it all!
Our next destination? LOS ANGELES! We are heading there on April 13th to be part of the VRLA conference where VINDICTA was selected to be part of the event's Indie Corner! If you’re there, make sure to pass by our booth and say hello! To stay updated on our news, make sure to subscribe on our website, we've got lots of great announcements coming up so hang tight!
